Your Invitation

Have you ever looked down at your ringing phone, seen the name on the screen, and immediately decided to let it go to voicemail? I suspect most of us have.
And I imagine you've experienced the opposite as well. The call you've been waiting for…the one that causes you to drop what you're doing, race across the room, and answer before the second ring, all because the voice on the other end matters that much to you.
The calls we answer reveal something about what we value, who we trust, and where our hearts long to connect. There is something profoundly human about longing to hear from someone we love.
I believe that same longing is woven into our souls by our Creator. It’s a longing not merely to know about God, but to know Him deeply.
Perhaps that's what the psalmist was conveying in Psalm 42:7 - "Deep calls to deep."
Over the years, many have understood this phrase to describe something profoundly relational: our deep need for connection in response to God's deep love.
It is a holy invitation responding to a sacred longing.
The problem is that we often misunderstand the longing itself. We assume the ache within us is a call for more achievement, more security, more certainty, more affirmation, more distraction, or more control. We spend years trying to satisfy a spiritual hunger with things that were never designed to feed us.
And even when we begin to suspect that our longing is actually for God, many of us quietly assume that this kind of intimacy is reserved for “special people”—the spiritually mature, the pastors, the people who seem to hear God's voice more clearly than we do.

But what if that's not true?
What if you have a Heavenly Father who created you for deep connection with Him? What if the restlessness you feel isn't a problem to solve, but an invitation to answer?
Perhaps God placed that longing within you because He intends to satisfy it Himself.
In the coming weeks, we'll explore some of the common "pool noodles" we cling to—the fears, distractions, beliefs, and comforts that keep us floating safely on the surface of our faith—and what it looks like to release them and boldly step into a deeper relationship with God.
But for this week, I want to encourage you to simply raise your awareness of how the Lord might be stirring your heart for more of Him. Grab a notebook and begin paying attention. Pray for sensitive eyes and attentive ears. Record the moments when you feel He is calling you deeper. Pay attention to the places where your soul feels restless, hungry, or curious.
Because perhaps the question isn't whether God is calling to you — it’s whether you’re willing to answer and how you’ll respond.
If this longing resonates with you, I explore this journey much more deeply in A Story Worth Living, where I share how one desperate woman changed the way I think about faith, intimacy, and the invitation of deep calls to deep.
Reflections
Think about a time in which you felt closest to God. What were the circumstances and how did it make you feel?
Pause each day and open your heart to consider how God might be calling you. Journal what you hear and feel.
Dear Lord, This week I ask You to make me spiritually sensitive to Your call. I open my heart in eager expectation for Your voice and anything You long to share with me. I believe that You are big enough, loving enough, and capable enough to pursue and maintain a deep connection with every person You’ve created, myself included. Thank You for loving me enough to call me out of a shallow faith and into a more intimate relationship with You. In Jesus’s name, Amen
