When Life Feels Like Extra

Psalms 90:12 reminds us to number our days and recognize that life is fragile yet meaningful. This isn’t meant to make us fear time, but to notice it, be grateful, and live intentionally.
Numbering our days isn’t about counting how many we have left. It’s about paying attention to the ones we’re living right now, resisting autopilot, and choosing presence over hurry.

I turned 52 last week, and this birthday felt more significant to me than turning the big 5-0. My mom was 52 when she died, and her life and death have shaped so much of who I am. For years, I grieved what she missed—my wedding, my sons, my unfolding life. But then, something shifted.
Instead of grieving what she missed, I’ve started to hold what I still get—with gratitude—every year, every season, every mundane and monumental moment. From here on out, I have more life than my mom had.
That awareness doesn’t make life heavier; it makes it sweeter. It softens my grip, enhances my joy, and changes how I receive everyday moments.
That’s why I’m calling this my “icing on the cake” year—not because the cake isn’t good, but because everything from here feels like a gift. I’m celebrating 52 for 52 weeks. A whole year and a growing list of things I want to do, learn, experience, release, give, and celebrate. Excessive? Maybe. Over the top? Some might say so.
For me, it’s a commitment to abundant joy, gratitude for every breath, and loving the world around me with reckless abandon.
