Seeking Whitespace

Updated: Jun 1

In graphic design, there’s a concept called whitespace. It’s the intentional space surrounding elements—between letters, lines, and images—that allows a design to breathe.

Without it, everything competes, and the core message gets lost. The eye doesn’t know where to land.

You’ve probably seen it. One design feels clean, clear, and compelling. Another feels crowded and chaotic. The same content with different spacing can result in a completely different impact.

When there isn’t enough whitespace, the most important elements don’t stand out. They get drowned out.

The same is true in our lives.

When we don’t have margin, when every hour is filled, and every thought is occupied, everything begins to blur. We move from one thing to the next, but nothing is as meaningful or effective as it could be.

I’ve lived this: where seasons are packed with planning, meetings, conversations, family needs, and responsibilities. Full calendars, full mind… and still, something essential is missing.

Because whitespace isn’t just a design principle. It’s a spiritual one.

When we fill our lives doing things for God, we can miss the quiet space needed to be with Him.

And without that space, even the most meaningful parts of our lives begin to lose their clarity.

Here are six practical, realistic ways a busy woman can create “whitespace” with God, without needing to overhaul her entire schedule:

  • Start with one quiet minute, not an hour. Before reaching for your phone in the morning, sit still for 60 seconds to simply raise your awareness of God's presence.

  • Build it into what you’re already doing. Turn your commute, shower, or morning coffee into a sacred space. No extra time required, just a space to focus your attention on God.

  • Leave intentional gaps in your calendar. Even 10–15 minutes between commitments creates space to reset instead of rushing from one thing to the next.

  • Go for a “no input” walk. Skip the podcast or music. Let your mind be quiet and notice God in the silence.

  • Keep Scripture visible and simple. Write one verse on a sticky note or your phone lock screen. Return to it throughout the day. (Our free Anchor Statements cards are a great resource for this practice.)

  • End the day with reflection, not scrolling. Ask: Where did I notice God today? Where did I miss Him? Keep it gentle, not pressured. (Our free Aligned Guide is a great resource for this practice.)

Reflections

  1. How is my current pace impacting who I am becoming?

  2. What is one practice you will commit to this week to create whitespace with God?
