Search & Rescue Mission

Updated: Apr 24

As I reflected on the cross and the empty tomb this past weekend, my attention was also drawn to the news of a search and rescue mission for a downed U.S. airman.

Initially, I imagined the airman must have felt scared and isolated. However, an interview with a previously “missing” service member changed my perspective. He explained that, thanks to their training, downed airmen are taught not to panic. Instead, they remain alert, work to avoid capture, and trust that a rescue mission is already underway and will come for them.

On Easter morning, I woke to the news that the mission had been successful; the airman had been found and was safe. Military teams worked around the clock throughout the 48 hours he was missing, and countless people made every effort to bring him home. One line shared afterward stayed with me: “He was never alone.”

How fitting to hear this story as we celebrate the Resurrection.

We have a Savior who went to even greater lengths to rescue us. A Savior who went behind enemy lines. A Lord who endured the cross, and who made a way for us to be found, restored, and brought near.

And just like the airman, even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming—even when it seems like we’re surrounded by difficulties or completely alone—we are never abandoned.

God sees. God knows. God is near.

The saving grace of Christ on the cross was once and for all. And the Father is always at work drawing us back to Himself.

Reflections

  1. What in your life feels like “enemy territory” — where you are most vulnerable, uncertain, or alone? What changes when you believe God is near and attentive?

  2. Just as the airman trained for this moment, we are being formed in everyday moments. What truths will you lean into this week to strengthen your faith?

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” — Psalm 23:4
