Becoming Viola Davis

A recent snowstorm in North Carolina was the perfect opportunity to curl up with a good book. I was reading Viola Davis’ memoir, Finding Me, when my husband, Chad, suddenly giggled and snapped a photo of me.
I didn’t know why until he showed it to me. The cover of Davis’ book features her face. As I held the book up in front of me, it looked like I was her—quite a funny sight!

But the moment lingered longer than the laugh.
Her storytelling is so captivating that I found myself completely engrossed in her life. I felt her pain. I could see the scenes as she guided me through the pivotal moments that shaped her story. For a brief moment, it was as if her story had become my story.
And that’s when I realized…this is exactly what I hope happens for readers of A Story Worth Living.
I pray that as you enter the story of a woman’s encounter with Jesus, found in the book of Luke, you don’t remain on the outside as an observer—but that the story draws you in so deeply you begin to recognize yourself within it. Her questions become your questions. Her courage stirs your courage. Her healing awakens your own.
Because when we allow ourselves to be fully immersed in a story, something holy can happen. The distance between “her story” and my story begins to close. And in that space, courage, hope, and healing no longer belong to someone else—they become personal.
Reflections
When have you been so drawn into a story that it felt personal, almost as if it were speaking directly to you? What stirred in you as you read?
If Scripture could meet you as a living story rather than a lesson, what do you hope it would awaken or heal in you?
“The story of Jesus is not just something to be believed, but something to be entered.” — Frederick Buechner
